In March, we set aside time to honor the countless women who have paved the way for greatness in our country in fields too numerable to list. As the saying goes, “Behind every great man, is a woman,” and it’s true that we owe our lives (quite literally!) to women! Here’s a round up of ways you and your families can celebrate Women’s History Month, including local events happening right here in the Denver area!

Luckily today there are countless options when it comes to movies and TV shows that feature strong leading female characters (hello, Frozen!), but unfortunately it was not always that way. That’s why this Women’s History Month is the perfect time to devote your movie nights to the ladies of the pack! Here’s a great list of family-friendly movies that feature female characters for you to enjoy this month. Some of our favorites include The Secret Garden, Little Women, and Annie. Or take a night out from the kids and visit the Denver Film Society to catch the Women+Film Festival, from March 15-20. This year’s festival includes a full schedule of lady-led films, as well as “panel discussions, in-person guests, and receptions while highlighting thought-provoking, inspirational stories of women from around the world.” You can purchase tickets and find more information about all of this year’s events here.

It is almost impossible to turn on the radio today and not hear a strong woman belting out a tune across the airwaves, so it should not be too difficult to pay tribute to some of music’s finest female voices this month. This site has a TON of great podcasts about women throughout musical history, starting thousands of years ago in the middle ages to more recently when Liza Minelli hit the stage. If you’d rather let the songs just speak for themselves, enjoy this special Women’s History Month playlist from Oxford University Press.

This month, take the time to focus on strong female characters during your family story times. A Mighty Girl is a fantastic website that compiles the best books, movies, and toys for “smart, confident, and courageous girls.” Here’s a link to some of their recommended female-focused books for kids. Also, the Amelia Bloomer Project works to produce yearly lists of their favorite recommended feminist literature from birth through age 18. Check out their list of the top books for 2016. A few of our very favorite books about amazing girls include Grace for President, all of the titles in the prolific Madeline series, and Hamster Princess: Harriet the Invincible.

Perhaps the best way to learn about Women’s History this month is by getting out and exploring right here in Denver! Starting this month and continuing through the end of June, the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame will have a special exhibit at the Denver Public Library entitled “Celebrating Colorado Women,” where you can learn about many of their past inductees. You can also go on an adventure around the city with Denver Story Trek and their interactive guide to teaching you about “Women of the West.” The trek will take you through historic locations, including the Four Mile Historic Park and the Molly Brown House Museum while you listen to educational stories about the women who made each location an important piece of Denver history.
