Launching DMMB:: Building a Community

Like many Denver metro residents, I am not a native.notquitenative2

Yes, I admit it — I am one of the thousands who have invaded this great state in search of excitement, adventure, and over 300 days of sunshine a year. Moving to Denver after college was one of the best decisions I ever made. This is where I started my career, signed my first solo lease, met and fell in love with the man of my dreams, owned my first home – this is where my son was born – where I became “mom”.

Becoming a mom in a new-ish city can be tough. Yes, I realize that becoming a mother in ANY city isn’t exactly what one would call “leisurely”. This tough isn’t just about the exhaustion, doubts, fears, tantrums, and diaper rash though – the tough I experienced was also about a lack of a community of other moms. Sure, I have some wonderful friends who are moms, and who are loving and would do anything to help out. However, as a full time working mom, I don’t get to see them as often as I’d like, and often feel uncomfortable or silly reaching out to ask questions I feel like I should have the answers to.

MOPS-less, playgroup-less, book club-less, park stroller workout group-less — I was back home in Kansas over the holidays spending time with family and friends, starting to feel the twinge of regret that we live out of state and aren’t closer to a comfortable community of support. A very dear friend came over with her two young daughters for a playdate, and that was the afternoon THIS started.

This friend had moved back to KS in the last few years, had children, changed careers, and ultimately decided to stay home and find something more flexible to do with her time and passions. I laughed when she talked about this “time” she was going to fill, as she had come with a toddler and infant in tow. She started talking about a collaborative blog she was starting in our hometown, for LOCAL moms, writing about LOCAL things, connecting in LOCAL places, and sharing about mommyhood. This blog was going to be part of a national network of mom blogs, that all share parenting resources, advice, and help each other build their local communities.

Launching DMMBYES! I realized, THAT is what I needed. Local resources from moms that live near me – a community that could be built online and off. As the full-time working mom of a toddler who has a busy career, volunteer commitments, and absolutely no free time — I decided that starting Denver Metro Moms Blog is precisely what I needed to do. {I mean, if my lovely friend at Wichita Moms Blog can do this while juggling an infant AND a toddler, surely I could make this work!}

Now – here we are.

We’re ready to build community, we’re ready to support local moms, provide local resources, host events, give away some awesome local products and services, laugh, and commiserate. We have a team of 18 fabulous contributing writers from all over the Denver Metro Area {and Colorado Springs and Salida!}, and we cannot wait to connect with you.

We want to know what resources you’re interested in, local events and business you’re excited about, favorite things about this amazing place we live, ideas you have about being a mom, and we want to build this community of local moms.

Let’s get social!
